Coaching CYA Basketball
Volunteer information 2010-11

NOTE: As of 1 December all coaches for the CYA house and travel program for the 2011-12 Winter season have been selected. Beginning in January, applications to coach in the Spring season will be accepted.

CYA Basketball uses volunteer coaches aged 16 and up for both its house and travel programs. By rule, all CYA house coaches must be at least 16 years old and all travel coaches must be at least 25. For those younger than 25, volunteers are only eligible to coach teams at grades in which the both head and assistant coaches are at least 3 years older than the oldest player on the team. In addition, coaches younger than 25 years of age must have an adult at least 25 years old on the sideline during games and present at all practices.

You can volunteer to coach for the Winter program as soon as Spring registration for basketball begins in mid-January.  Final selection of the coaches is at the discretion of the league administrators and Basketball board. Please note that all head and assistant coaches are subject to a criminal background check through the KidSafe program. Those who do not register in the CYA database or do meet the standards set by CYA will not be allowed to coach.

To serve as a CYA Basketball coach, you must register online in the CYA database so that your name will be available to the league administrator as a coaching volunteer. If you signed up as a coach when you registered your child for Basketball, you need take no further action. If you did not sign up to coach when you registered your child or you do not have a child playing, then click on the Volunteer only link on the left side of the main CYA web page (https://ssl.demosphere.com/scripts/runisa.dll?s7:gp::80759+olr/Volunteer1) or the Volunteer to coach link on the left side of this page. Make sure that you click the drop list in order to view all the programs and sign up for the appropriate league.

You must also undergo a mandatory background check through CYA’s KidSafe program to be eligible to coach. This used to be part of the process of signing up to coach but is now a separate procedure. To undergo this process, go to the "Mandatory Background Check" link on the left side of the main CYA webpage (www.chantillyyouth.org). Note that the information that you enter through this link and the results of the background check are strictly confidential. All adult coaches must undergo a new check beginning in Fall 2008; however, once you are approved for any CYA sport beginning in Fall 2008, you are cleared for the following 2 years for all CYA sports. To see if you are already cleared, check the CYA Volunteers that have passed our background check process link on the main CYA web page. It is important to make sure that the expiration date of your clearance is later than March 15 2011; if not, you will need to be recertified.
2011-12 CYA House Rules
Update: 9 December 2011

Both the CYA Rules summary sheet and a revised version (dated 12/8/2011) of complete CYA Basketball House Rules for 2011-12 have been posted. The revision to the full Basketball House Rules aligned the full Basketball House Rules with the Rules Summary, eliminating the inconsistencies on overtime (both sets of rules now specify that 3rd grade does not have overtime periods) and time outs (both boys and girls 7-8 grade now get 3 full and 2 30-second timeouts).

Click on the links on the left side of this page to view our download these rules in Adobe PDF format.

If you notice any inconsistency or ambiguity in the rules, please notify Rien Kiewel, the Rules/Sportsmanship coordinator, at rien.kiewel@verizon.net.

CYA Coaches Clinic
Instructional Materials

CYA Basketball and TrueAp held a successful free Coaches Clinic at Chantilly HS from 2-6 PM on Sunday 11/20 aimed at coaches in grades 12-6 and all new coaches. CYA is investigating holding another clinic in December or early January.

As part of this clinic, TrueAp has developed instructional manuals on various basketball subject areas that will be useful to our coaches. These manuals can be accessed and printed through the following URLS. IMPORTANT: These URLs are case-sensitive.
