Referees
Spring 2008
CYA Basketball uses volunteer referees to officiate games in the Spring program for Grades 4-8. Volunteers can be either adults or youth aged 13 and above.

There is no training program offered in the Spring. All referees in the Spring program must have received prior training or have prior officiating experience.

Volunteer referees are paid between $10-$25 per game, depending upon experience and the age level of those playing in the game. Referees are also compensated for their attendance at the training sessions and for mentoring other officials.

If you are a trained referee and want to volunteer for the Spring season, contact the Referee Coordinator, Monica Despins, at despinsw@cox.net

NOTE: Games for grades 9-12 (Boys and Girls) and Boys grade 8 are officiated by referees provided by the Cardinal Basktball Officiating Association.

Winter Program 2008-09
CYA Basketball uses volunteer referees to officiate games in the Winter program for Grades 1-8. Volunteers can be either adults or youth aged 13 and above.

A training program is offered to teach newcomers the necessary skills to officiate and to provide a refresher to veteran officials. All house refs must be certified through these training classes. The time and place of this training session (not to be held before October) will be announced on this web page.

Volunteer referees are paid between $10-$20 per game, depending upon experience and the age level of those playing in the game. Referees are also compensated for their attendance at the training sessions and for mentoring other officials.

If you are a trained referee and want to volunteer for the Winter season, contact the Referee Coordinator, Monica Despins, at despinsw@cox.net. We are planning a refresher training for existing refs so make sure that you find out when that is to be held.

If you not previously been trained, please contact Monica Despins to express your interest in becoming a new CYA referee and to be put on the mailing list so that you will be notified when our training sessions are held.

NOTE: Games for grades 9-12 are officiated by referees provided by the Cardinal Basktball Officiating Association.

Sportsmanship Issues
Reporting
All instances of poor sportsmanship displayed by any player, coach, official, or spectator as well as all behavior-related technical fouls must be reported to CYA Basketball within 48 hours of the game or event.

Any displays of poor sportsmanship can be reported to CYA Basketball by anyone (officials, coaches, players, or spectators). However, reports are required from at least one referee and both coaches in the following situations:
  • Yellow or red card issued by CYA House referees for unsportsmanship behavior
  • Technical fouls (except administrative technical fouls) issues by CYA House referees or Cardinal referees

The Incident Report form on the left side of this page should be used if possible to report such behavior.  Completed incident forms should be sent to Referee Coordinator, Monica Despins, at despinsw@cox.net and to the league administrator for the league involved or the Boys/Girls Commissioner. If the behavior warrants further investigation and possible disciplinary action, then the issue will be referred to the CYA Basketball Sportsmanship Committee.
