Coaches will assign wrestlers to practice sessions based on age and/or experience/skill. Practices are designed to account for the different ages and experience/skill levels. If you wrestler is a first year JUNIOR we may assign him to the Bantam/Midget practice until he is ready to move up to the Junior/Senior/Intermediate practice.
Practice on School/Federal Holidays: If we can get into the school, we will have practice. Watch your email and the WWW site- there will be a message in either case.
INCLEMENT WEATHER: If Fairfax County Public Schools in Chantilly are closed due to inclement weather, we will not have practice that evening.
What the CYA coaches expect from CYA Wrestlers:
- Work Hard
- Be on time for practice. We start at 6pm for Bantam/Midgets and 7pm for Intermediates/Junors/Seniors. Be ready to start on time and we’ll get out on time- have your wrestling shoes on and be ready to begin warm-ups.
- Come to practice- We can’t teach kids to wrestle that don’t come to practice. We realize there are scheduling conflicts and sometimes a boy can’t make every practice. Try to minimize this- if it’s a matter of transportation, we can figure something out. Our goal is to increase the number of practices so that we not only get more practice time, but to allow kids scheduling flexibility with other activities.
- Work hard- we only have 3 hours a week to practice. That sounds like a lot, but its only half the time our competition gets.
- Stay focused in practice- work on the skills, techniques, or drills the coaches are teaching, always trying to improve.
- When coaches blow a whistle, that means stop what you’re doing and be ready for instructions
- No talking when the coaches are talking or trying to teach the team new moves
- Hustle- When told to do something, do it quickly so we can keep the practice moving. We don’t have lots of time and need to make the most of what we have.
- Set Goals- decide what you want to achieve and work toward accomplishing that goal.
- Believe in yourself- you can do anything you believe you can. There is no limit to what you can accomplish when you set your mind.
- Wrestle to Win- No matter what you do, never give less than 100%.
What CYA Wrestlers can expect from their Coaches:
- Role Models examples of the type of character that grown men should possess.
- Develop practice plans to help all CYA wrestlers improve their skills.
- We try to structure practice with the attention span of our kids in mind.
- Insistence on high standards of performance- that each wrestler do their best at each practice and in each match.
- We want to develop respect for the sport, while teaching the team to have fun
